“The film endeavors to portray the soul’s passage from life to the underworld, and ultimately to heaven. Set in the 1980s, the picture weaves a distinctive surrealism into grounded reality. Through sweeping orchestral music and a primarily monochrome palette, pierced by sudden bursts of vivid color, I sought to give form to emotions that dwell between deep sorrow and lamentation. The color blue symbolizes hope, while purple evokes despair. Black and white imagery, along with film scratches and TV interpolations, represents a distorted, uncertain world as seen through the kid’s eyes. Finally, green signifies the presence of evil.”
